Choosing the Right Lingerie & Size
Still having problems finding the perfect fit? The odds are that you’re suffering from one of the seven sins of badly fitting lingerie. A quick look at our simple guide should solve your problems but, if none of the tips work and you’re still uncomfortable, most of the high street stores that sell lingerie also offer discrete, professional advice to help you find the fit that’s right for you.
Bra riding up at the back?
This is probably all down to the back size of your bra. If the bra is riding up, you most likely need a smaller back. Be warned! Reducing the back may also reduce the cup size, so you may have to go for a bigger cup. So, if a 36B is too big around the back, you may be better off with a 34C instead.
Band digging into your body?
Feel like you’re being squeezed by a large rubber band? Try a larger back size – but bear in mind that you might have to go down a cup size to compensate.
Straps digging in to your shoulders?
The obvious solution is to make the straps a bit looser, but this doesn’t work in every case. If you find that fiddling with the straps makes no difference, try a smaller back size (but be sure to check the cup size again).
Straps slipping?
In most cases, straps that slip down the shoulders simply need a bit of tweaking to tighten them up. But, if you think you need a bit more support, wider straps may be the answer.
Spilling out of your cups?
Probably not the look you’re aiming for! Normally, this is easily solved with a larger cup size.
Cups wrinkling?
Cups that wrinkle, crease or fold are generally too big for the job. Try going down a cup size instead.
Wires digging in?
If they’re honest, nobody really wants to go through their day being prodded by bits of metal. Remember that the wires should be flat against your breast bone – if they’re digging in, you probably need a larger cup size.
REMEMBER: good fitting lingerie is not a luxury, and the perfect fit can be achieved with a little thought, proper measurements and just a touch of trial and error!
Size guide...
Find that perfect fit!
Lingerie is not just about making you feel good. It is also about posture, comfort and making your outer garments look good. If you like, it is the foundation of your whole look.
It’s surprising that so many women regularly wear the wrong size and sacrifice their shape and comfort when all they need to do is follow two easy steps.
STEP 1: Measure your back size
With your bra on, run a tape measure around your ribcage directly under your bust. Make sure the tape is firm, but not too tight. Measure in inches and then round down to the nearest inch. For example, if you measure 30 inches, round down to 30. Then, to find your back size, add 4 if the measurement is an even number and 5 inches if it is odd.
A measurement of 30 inches gives a back size of 34. A measurement of 29 inches also gives a back size of 34.
STEP 2: Find your cup size
Next, measure around the fullest part of your bust to give the “overbust measurement”. This time, round up to the nearest inch. For example, 35 inches should be rounded up to 36 inches.
The difference between your back size and your overbust measurement will determine your cup size. The table below will tell you which cup size you need.

So, if your back size is 34 and your overbust measurement is 36, your bra size will be 34C. Simple as that!
Do bear in mind that there are so many different styles available and that not every style will suit your shape. But there’s nothing wrong with trying as many types and styles until you find a bra that gives you a good fit and makes you feel special.
